Creative Communities Urban is a two year project working in the communities of Midway and Newhall, working alongside community groups to develop new creative projects. Funded by a Derbyshire County Council Community Priorities grant, the aim of the fund is to develop new steering groups, to boost creative activity in these areas and add to the opportunities available in these areas for local people. Through the project we will be able to support community groups to run creative activities and events for communities, designed and developed by people that live within them.
Tuesday Night Club
Tuesday Night Club ran for 14 weeks at Midway Community Centre. It was an opportunity for all young people living in Midway, Newhall and the surrounding area to learn different creative techniques, working alongside professional artists each week. All sessions were free to attend with free refreshments provided. Following on from the success of this pilot, with around 40 young people attending each week, People Express are currently working alongside a group of parents to develop and sustain long term activities at the community centre.
Newhall Creative Collective
People Express are working alongside residents in Newhall to develop a programme of creative activities. In 2017, the residents group, ‘Friends of Chrysanthemum Court’, worked alongside People Express to deliver 8 weeks of pilot sessions, trying different art forms, to engage local residents and to begin a conversation about creative activities that the group would like to try moving forward. Later this year, the newly formed group, ‘Newhall Creative Collective’, are looking to launch a 12 month creative project, Chrysanthemum Creatives, working alongside People Express.
If you have a creative idea you would like to develop in your community People Express can support you.
