Hi, my name is Katie Gyte and I have spent five days at People Express to complete a work experience placement from Sunday 29th June to Thursday 3rd July. I found out about People Express through a Derbyshire council website that listed lots of organisations where we could possibly find work placements and I was interested in the creative work that they are apart of. I then went on to look at their website and found that they had organised different projects for their community and the outcome was great as a lot of people were working together to participate in a project and share their point of view like in the Famous At Last project.
After experiencing work here, I have found that People Express are an organisation that set up and run a variety of projects involving different community groups and artists in order to engage more people in the arts and allow people to learn new skills and share their own skills with others in a fun and interesting way.
During my placement here i have worked at the Festival of Leisure on Sunday which I enjoyed as i got to see first hand an artist working with People Express to do a silk painting workshop which I also tried myself while People Express did a painting on acetate workshop as well. For the rest of the week i have been completing my bronze Arts Award and i have learned about what happens behind the scenes of projects and workshops which is very interesting to see as a lot of work goes into organising the artists and setting them up.
I enjoyed seeing how People Express organise their workshops and then actually seeing it in action at the Festival of Leisure was great and was my favourite part of the placement, but I also liked doing my Arts Award as otherwise I probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do it and it has been fun to complete during the week.
In the future I would like to experience seeing more of the workshops and projects in action although to help in one was fantastic nevertheless and meeting an artist was interesting as I learned a new skill from her in the workshop.
