Passport 2 Music 2 (P2M2) uses the world of music to support children to explore who they are and what they think.
Children in South Derbyshire are extremely creative, they are funny, witty, and wise. We created a project that listens to them and builds on their creative skills, ideas and imagination.
P2M2 is our second pilot project supported by Youth Music this time designed for a younger age range (Year 4 - aged 8/9) and their families. Our first pilot worked with 11 to 18-year-olds and had a huge impact, many of the young people went on to study music in further education.
You can find out more about the original Passport to Music project here.
The structure of the P2M2 included:
- Introductory performances by professional musicians reaching over 500 children in 3 schools
- 8 after-school sessions with 25 children from 2 schools exploring Folk, Hop Hop, Jazz and classical Indian Music.
- 3 all-day music residencies with 12 children creating compositions, writing lyrics, playing new instruments and performing together to each other and families.
- Live performance as part of TIMBER festival 2024 on the Youth Landscapers ‘Stage of Possibility’.
Our Passport 2 Music projects also offer local young musicians training and shadowing opportunities and first-time paid employment as workshop leaders.
In 2024 the four trainee musicians - Dorothy Ella, Leah Wilcox, Ellie Smith and Sophie Lewellyn - went on to work together as ‘music leaders’ supporting children from Belmont Primary and Pennine Way Academy to perform at TIMBER.

We would like to thank all the children, parents and families that took part, and a huge thank you to Belmont School for hosting the residencies and to Pennine Way for their support.
We would like to say a thank you to the organisations that supported the development of the original project structure: English Folk, Dance and Song Society, NYJC, Baby People, Milapfest and South Derbyshire Music Centre and Hub.
