Derbyshire Makes Swadlincote is back, bringing a fun-filled day of creativity and community to the heart of Swad, 10 am - 4 pm, on Saturday 25th April 2026!
Our free festival invites curious makers of all ages to get hands-on, try something new and explore making in all its wonderful, magical forms. Meet local makers and artists, take part in free workshops, watch live demonstrations, be inspired at brand new exhibitions, and enjoy exciting performances across some of Swadlincote’s favourite town centre venues.
This year’s festival explores how South Derbyshire’s past, present and future are closely connected, like threads woven together. The skills, industries and stories that shaped the area, from mining and pottery to textiles and flax-growing, continue to influence how people live, make and create today.
Discover how Swadlincote’s heritage isn’t something distant or static, but something that actively shapes the “here and now”, inspiring makers and artists, and informing new sustainable craft practices and the evolving landscape of the National Forest.
Why not roll your sleeves up at our SUNBURST workshops. You’ll have a rare chance to make your own Bretby Pottery Sunburst ceramic logo using small-scale replica moulds that are 3D printed from a scan of the original (the only one in the world!). And while you’re there, explore the Bretby Art Pottery exhibition at the Magic Attic, uncovering the stories and people behind the pots through a colourful family tree.
Or step back in time for Lamplight – Stories of South Derbyshire’s Mining Past. Meet our interactive virtual miner and follow the trail of QR codes along the High Street to unlock real voices, memories and moments from South Derbyshire’s mining communities.
Have a go on a pottery wheel, take part in textile-making workshops, or simply soak up the atmosphere and watch skilled makers at work! Derbyshire Makes Swadlincote is a chance to reconnect with local stories, learn new skills, and celebrate the power of making together.
Whether you’re curious, creative, or just looking for a great day out, everyone is welcome!
